Crochet Loop — What It Is & How to Manage It

A loop is the round strand of yarn that forms the building blocks of every stitch. The working loop is the one currently sitting on your hook, ready for the next step.

Step-by-step:

1. Watch for loops at the top of each stitch (the “V”) or on your hook.
2. Keep even tension when forming loops — not too tight or they’ll be hard to work into.
3. Yarn overs create new loops; pulling yarn through completes a stitch.
4. In advanced stitches (like puff or cluster), you may have several loops on your hook before finishing.
5. Always end with one active loop remaining on the hook before moving on.
