Crochet Wave Stitch Pattern
This crochet example stitch tutorial is based on working the wave stitch within a stitch sampler project, but the basics can be applied if you wish to create a blanket with only wave stitches. Wave Stitch Pattern, is made up of repeating a sequence of stitches normally from short to tall. The wave pattern normally has 3 or more rows, as the sequence of stitches alternates per row, as shown in the image and stitch diagram to the left.
In this pattern example, it is an example of ;
- 1tr, 1dc, 1hdc, 1sc, 1hdc, 1dc, repeated into 6 sts of the previous 6 dc shell st, skipping over the sc st, from the previous row,
- then in the next it is a repeat of 1hdc, 1dc, 1tr, 1dc, 1hdc, 1sc for the next 6 sts of the second row,
- and 1tr, 1dc, 1hdc, 1sc, 1hdc, 1dc, into next 6 sts in the 3rd row
Crochet Wave stitch Pattern example
- Join color, ch3, * 1dc, 1hdc, 1sc, 1hdc, 1dc,1tr, into next 6 sts, rep from * 1dc, finish off color.
- Join color , ch2, * 1sc, 1hdc, 1dc, 1tr, 1dc, 1hdc, into next 6 sts, rep from * 1sc , finish off color.
- Join color, ch3, * 1dc, 1hdc, 1sc, 1hdc, 1dc,1tr, into next 6 sts, rep from * 1dc, finish off color.
- Join color, ch2, * 1sc, 1hdc, 1dc, 1tr, 1dc, 1hdc, into next 6 sts, rep from * 1sc, finish off color.

UK : sl st - slip stitch
AFR : gls - glysteek
1. Insert hook into the stitch or space.
2. Yarn over and pull through the stitch and the loop on your hook (one motion).
3. Used to join rounds or move without height.
UK : dc - double crochet
AFR : kb - kortbeen / kortbeentjies / enkelhekel
1. Insert hook into the next stitch.
2. Yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).
3. Yarn over and pull through both loops. → 1 sc complete.
UK : htr - half treble crochet
AFR : hlb - Halwe Langbeentjie / Half Lang Been / half-dubblehekel
1. Yarn over.
2. Insert hook into next stitch and pull up a loop (3 loops).
3. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.
UK : tr - treble crochet
AFR : lb - Langbeentjie / dubblehekel
1. Yarn over.
2. Insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops).
3. Yarn over and pull through first 2 loops (2 remain).
4. Yarn over and pull through last 2 loops.
UK : dtr - double treble crochet
AFR : dsl - dubble slag steek / driedubblehekel
1. Yarn over twice.
2. Insert hook in stitch, pull up loop (4 loops).
3. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops (3 remain).
4. Yarn over, pull through 2 loops (2 remain).
5. Yarn over, pull through last 2 loops.
UK : ch-sp - chain space
AFR : Ks sp - Kettingsteek spasie
1. Make a slip knot on the hook.
2. Yarn over (yo).
3. Pull yarn through the loop on the hook. → 1 ch made.
4. Repeat for desired number of chains.
UK : lp - loop
AFR : ls - Lus
1) Keep one working loop on the hook.
2) Create new loops with yarn overs and pulls.
3) Maintain even tension for consistent loops.
UK : sts - stitches
AFR : sts - Steke
1) Identify the stitch’s top “V”.
2) Insert hook as pattern instructs (both loops or FLO/BLO).
3) Work the stitch to completion. 4) Count stitches regularly.
UK : rep from * - repeat from *
AFR : her * - Herhaal van *
1) Find the *.
2) Work the instructions after it.
3) When told, go back to * and repeat the sequence the required number of times.
4) Stop when the pattern says.
UK : rep rows - repeat rows
AFR : Her/herh - Herhaal
