Welcome to the first section of your crochet journey! In these initial rows, you'll establish the base of your blanket, setting the stage for the beautiful textures and patterns to come. Throughout rows 1 to 15, you'll work with a variety of stitches, including:
- Double Crochet (dc): A versatile stitch that provides height and texture.

- 5dc Cluster: A stitch that groups five double crochets together, forming a textured cluster.

Start with your foundation row
The number is the stitch count per row will be the width of your blanket.
Chain 208 stitches
Starting chain and staring row
These two rows are not included in the row count for this pattern,
Chain 208, 1hdc into 3rd chain from hook, work 1 hdc into each chain stitch of starting chain. See detailed instructions below.
- Start with chaining the number of chains required for your blanket size according to the required stitches mentioned on the blanket, or starting chain stitches determined by your premade size swatch.
- Chain 2 more, work 1hdc stitch in the 3rd chain from the hook, this counts as your first hdc st of your foundation row.
- Work 1 hdc stitch into each of the chain stitches,
- work 1 hdc into the last stitch, do not finish off the color,
- chain 3, will count as the first stitch of the next row and the first row of your pattern, follow pattern instructions from here onwards.
Rows 1 & 2
Working the first row of the pattern
- Chain 3, counts as the first dc of row 1, as mentioned in the section above,
- Work 1 dc into each stitch of the row,
- work 1 dc in the last stitch of the row and finish of yarn color, turn work after completing the row
Working your next row - Row 2
Always start a new row on top of the last leg worked,
- Join the new color with sl, and 1sc over tails of the previous row,
- follow the starting chain stitch indicated in the pattern, at the start of each row, eg, (ch3) chain 3 for the first leg of row 2, counts as first dc st,
- follow the pattern and and take note of the pattern repeat, always remember to work one stitch into the last stitch of each row, (in row 2 the last stitch in the ch3 from row 1. ).
Working away your ends as you go along
To make life easier you can work in your tail ends as you go.
- Fold the tail behind your work, and work stitches over your tail, like in the example above.

Stitch Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- (sc/dc) = single crochet
- (hdc/htr) = half (double crochet/treble crochet)
- (dc/tr) = (double crochet/treble crochet)
- (tr/dtr) = (treble crochet/dc
- V-st = (1 (dc/tr), ch 1, 1 (dc/tr) in the same stitch)
- 5-(dc/tr) cluster = work 5 (dc/tr) stitches into the same space, join together at the top
Starting Row / Foundation:
Ch 208. (hdc/htr) in the 3rd ch from the hook. (hdc/htr) in each ch across. (206 sts) Fasten off if changing colors.

Rows 1 – 6
Ch 3, (dc/tr) in each st across. (206 sts) Fasten off at the end of each row if changing colors.
Row 7
Ch 2, (hdc/htr) in each st across. (206 sts) Fasten off.
Row 8
Ch 3, Skip 1 st, * V-st in next st, skip 2 sts. Repeat from * across. (dc/tr) in the last st. Fasten off.
Row 9
Ch 3, * Ch 1, 5-(dc/tr) cluster in the ch-1 space. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, (dc/tr) in the last st. Fasten off.
Row 10
Ch 3, Work 3 (dc/tr) into each ch-1 space between clusters. Skip last cluster space, (dc/tr) in the last st. Fasten off.
Rows 11–14
Ch 3, * 3 (dc/tr) into the space before each 3-(dc/tr) group from the previous row.
Repeat from * across. (dc/tr) in the last st. Fasten off each row.
Repeat for Rows 12–14, changing colors if desired.
Rows 15–17
Ch 3, (dc/tr) in each st across. Fasten off each row.
Tips for Beginners
- Color Changes: Finish the last stitch of the previous row with the new color for a clean edge.
- Weaving in Ends: Work in yarn tails as you go to keep your blanket neat.
- Stitch Markers: Use markers to track the first stitch in each row, especially for V-stitches, clusters, or popcorn stitches.
- Remember US/UK Terminology: Check the notes for each stitch to follow the pattern correctly.
