For the coaster examples I used a 4.00 mm : US - G/6 size crochet hook, with Double Knit, Elle Cotton On DK, 100% Virgin Cotton yarn, the ball weight of the skein is 250g with an length of approx. 415m, one only needs about 100m of yarn per side.
The finished size of the example coaster is about : 12 x 15 cm
Materials required for creating this project :
Cotton Yarn and matching hook
Yarn used to make these coasters –
ELLE Cotton on and a 4mm crochet hook.
ELLE Cottons and a 4mm crochet hook.
Yarn Needle to weave in threads.
Scissors.
Yarn Requirements
Cotton yarn works best for these coasters as it is sturdy and washable, samples are made from thick cotton yarn so the coasters are thick and durable.
You can use any yarn from DK weight to Worsted weight yarn , just ensure you have a matching hook to make yours and the size will increase.
I suggest DK weight yarn and a 4mm hook, Worsted weight yarn and a 5mm hook. Experiment and see what is in your stash.
You should not use synthetic fiber yarn for a coaster, potholder or hot pad/trivet.
Only use natural fibers like cotton or wool, which is best for heat resistance.
Natural fiber can handle the heat without melting, natural fibers are good insulators and can handle the heat.
Stay away from synthetic fiber yarn fibers like acrylic, nylon or polyester, or any yarn that uses a blend of these.
