Space Before
In crochet patterns, “space before” and “space after” refer to the open gaps just before or after a specific stitch or stitch group. These spaces help you know exactly where to insert your hook to keep your pattern even and accurate.

Step-by-Step Guide for Crochet Term: Space Before
1.Locate the stitch mentioned.
Example: “In the space before the cluster…"
2.Look directly in front (to the right for right-handers, left for left-handers) of that stitch or cluster.
That small gap, often a chain space, is your “space before.”
3.Insert your hook into that space to work your next stitch as instructed.
4.Continue the pattern, often the next direction will move you to the space after the same stitch.
Example:
Work 1 DC in the space before the shell, this means place your stitch into the gap right before the shell stitches start.
