Crochet Patterns with a Modern African-Inspired Twist
Hi, I’m Stouto, the fibre artist and designer behind Stouto Creative Crochet, a creative space dedicated to modern crochet design, texture-led patterns, and thoughtful fibre art.
I create thoughtfully designed crochet patterns that blend traditional techniques with modern style, making them enjoyable, achievable, and visually striking for makers of all skill levels. From cozy crochet blanket patterns to bold statement accessories, every design is crafted with intention, creativity, and a deep love for fibre art.
From Yarn to Art: My Creative Journey
My work is inspired by nature, everyday moments, and African-styled design influences, brought to life through texture, colour, and structure. I enjoy experimenting with different yarn weights, fibres, and colour combinations to create patterns that feel both timeless and contemporary.
Whether I’m designing a new pattern, building detailed crochet graphs, or working stitch by stitch with hook and yarn, my goal is always the same:
To create fibre art that feels meaningful, tactile, and deeply satisfying to make.

About the Designer Behind Stouto Creative Crochet
Modern Crochet Designer | Textured Crochet Patterns | Fibre Artist Story
Linda Slabbert is the crochet designer and fibre artist behind Stouto Creative Crochet, a growing crochet pattern studio focused on modern crochet design, textured stitches, and African-inspired creative aesthetics.
With a background of more than 25 years in web development, Stouto combines technical precision with creative fibre artistry to produce crochet patterns that are both visually striking and clearly written for makers of all skill levels.
Her designs often focus on crochet blanket patterns, large granny squares, textured stitch samplers, and modern crochet bags—blending traditional techniques with contemporary design elements.
Stouto Creative Crochet began as a side business, created to generate additional income during a time when financial stability was uncertain. Over time, it has grown into something far more meaningful—a creative business built with intention, resilience, and a deep love for the craft.
You can explore the full collection of designs on the Stouto Creative Crochet patterns page, where new patterns and creative projects are added regularly.
From Web Developer to Crochet Designer
Before crochet became the centre of my creative world, I spent more than 25 years working as a web developer. Much of that time was dedicated to building and managing digital systems, including 15 years within a wireless internet service provider, where I supported infrastructure and helped develop technical solutions across multiple platforms.
I’m a home-grown Newcastlian, and earlier in my career I spent several years working in Johannesburg, gaining valuable experience in a fast-moving and ever-evolving industry.
Although I published my first crochet pattern in 2018, it has only been in recent years that this path truly began to take shape. Over the past two years, I have been rebuilding my life from the ground up—rediscovering creativity, independence, and the things that bring me genuine joy.
Crochet became more than just a craft during this time. It became a space for healing, creativity, and rebuilding something meaningful with my own hands.
Today, Stouto Creative Crochet represents that journey—a combination of technical experience, creative exploration, resilience, and a deep love for fibre art. Every pattern I create carries a piece of that story: thoughtful design, patience, and the belief that beautiful things can grow from new beginnings.
Choosing to Rebuild and Reclaim My Path
Before stepping fully into this creative journey, I worked as a senior developer in the technology industry—a career I had built with dedication over many years.
During that time, I was also navigating the realities of family life and partnership. As responsibilities grew, I found myself taking on more—both as a mother and financially. To create stability, I built a secondary business alongside my full-time career.
Balancing work, children, and home life often felt like carrying multiple roles at once. Over time, it became clear that I needed to make a change—one that would allow me to create a more sustainable and fulfilling path forward.
I made the difficult decision to step away from my long-term career and begin building something of my own.
In the years that followed, I faced challenges that tested my resilience and sense of direction. Those moments, while difficult, became turning points—encouraging me to reflect, grow, and fully commit to a new path.
Today, that journey has led me here—creating, designing, and sharing something meaningful.
I share this story in the hope that it resonates with others. Life doesn’t always unfold as planned, but even in uncertain seasons, there is space to rebuild, to rediscover your strength, and to move forward in a way that feels true to you.
Finding Peace Through Crochet
Through some of the most difficult moments in my life, it was the quiet, steady rhythm of crochet that helped carry me through.
There were days filled with overwhelm and uncertainty—moments where everything felt heavy. Instead of letting those feelings take over, crochet gave me a way to pause, breathe, and gently work through it all. Stitch by stitch, it became a space where I could begin to turn those hard days into something meaningful and beautiful.
For me, crochet is more than just a craft—it’s a journey. It creates time to reflect, to slow down, and to find clarity, even in the most challenging situations.
I truly believe this is a path many people walk at different points in their lives. You are never alone in those moments. And while creative outlets like crochet can bring comfort and grounding, it’s also important to reach out when life feels overwhelming. Speaking to someone you trust or seeking professional support can be an important step toward finding peace and balance.
Designed With Care, Made With Intention
Every pattern I release is created with real makers in mind. I test thoroughly, refine instructions, and focus on clear stitch structure so you can enjoy the process as much as the finished piece.
If you ever have questions or need help with a pattern, you’re always welcome to reach out. I’m here to help and want you to feel confident and happy with every project you make using my designs.
Your reviews and feedback mean the world to me. They not only help me grow as a designer but also guide other crocheters who are discovering my work for the first time.
