Yarn & Hook Suggestions
- Yarn Shown: DK Cotton (recommended for stitch definition)
- Hook: 4.5 mm for DK (Light Worsted, Category 3)
- Adjusting yarn weight changes the finished size:
- Worsted (Category 4): Hook 5–6 mm
- Bulky (Category 5): Hook 6.5–9 mm
Lightweight yarn + smaller hook = smaller square
Chunkier yarn + larger hook = larger square
This flexibility makes the Sunnyday Square a fantastic base pattern for different projects.
For the crochet square pattern in the photo example, I used six bright colors: Bright yellow, Burnt orange, Deep red, Sea blue, Light denim blue, and natural cotton white. I used 6 skeins of yarn of 85m / 90 yards of yarn and could easily create 3 squares, but I had some leftover blue colored yarn, so if you switch up the center colors of yarn to use more blue colors, or use a more even distribution of colors in your rows, you can easily end up with 4 crochet squares using the above-mentioned quantity of yarn.

Suggested yarn for pattern.
Photo tutorial and square examples are made up of cotton yarn, this is only used as a suggestion, any yarn of your choice can be used.
Lightweight yarn using a smaller crochet hook will make a smaller square, and heavier yarn using a larger crochet hook will result in a larger square.

Written Instructions
Free: SunnyDays Large Granny Square Pattern
Difficulty level: Intermediate
Skills required:
- Understand the basics of working in the round.
- Joining different yarn colors and how to end and finish rows.
- The online free version of this pattern is not a step-by-step tutorial, it supply the written pattern only.
Techniques used:
- All crochet squares are worked in the round, ensure that your final row count per side is correct or you will struggle to join your block at a late stage.
- Ensure that each side of a square has the required stitch count, according to the pattern instruction count, this will ensure that joining your squares will be straightforward.
- Gauge is not important, but it's best to stick to the same yarn weight and crochet hook throughout making your squares, or your squares would not match up.
- Work ends, as you go will help you at the end when it comes to finishing the blanket unless you love spending a day at least to work on loose ends.
Quick Stitch Guide
All stitch instructions are available in both US Crochet Terminology and UK Crochet Terminology, making it easy to follow along using the terms you are most familiar with.
If you are new to any of the stitches used in this pattern, we recommend reviewing the relevant stitch guide before starting. Each guide includes step-by-step instructions, helpful tips, and stitch terminology conversions where applicable.
Take your time, practice any unfamiliar stitches, and most importantly—enjoy the process of creating your blanket one row at a time.

Crochet Pattern FAQ

What size is considered a large granny square?
A large granny square typically measures between 9–12 inches (23–30 cm) across. The Sunnyday Square measures about 11 inches (30 cm), making it a great size for blankets, pillows, and garments.
How much yarn do I need for a large granny square?
On average, you’ll need about 100–150 yards (90–135 m) of yarn for a 9 to12 inch granny square. The Sunnyday Square uses approx. 125–135 yards per square, depending on stitch tension and color changes.
What yarn is best for a large granny square blanket?
DK or Worsted weight yarn works beautifully for large granny squares. Cotton yarn gives great stitch definition, while acrylic or wool blends are softer and warmer ,ideal for blankets.
Can I make a blanket with just one large granny square?
Yes! Many crocheters love making a blanket from one giant granny square by continuing to add rounds until the blanket reaches the desired size. The Sunnyday Square can also be expanded this way for a full throw.
What can I make with large granny squares besides blankets?
Large granny squares are versatile. You can turn them into pillows, tote bags, wall hangings, ponchos, or patchwork-style cardigans**. The Sunnyday Square works especially well for bold statement projects.
