What Is a Temperature Blanket?
A temperature blanket is a unique, year-long crochet project that reflects the daily temperatures of a specific location. Each day, you crochet a row , square, or motif using a color that corresponds to the day's high. low, or average temperature, based on a predefined color key noted in your chart.
Over time, your blanket becomes a visual record of the changing weather throughout the year. Whether you're making this as a personal challenge, a family heirloom, or a gift to commemorate a birth year or anniversary, a temperature blanket is both meaningful and fun. Track the seasons, mark special dates with accent rows, and end the year with a handmade masterpiece full of memories.

How does a temperature blanket work?
To get started, you’ll will need, a temperature range and matching color palette, a daily record of high (or low) temperatures, your favorite yarn, and hook. Below is detailed information on how to start.
1.Choose a location
This can be your hometown or any location that has meaning to you.
2.Select a year
This can be your current year or select a memorable year like a pregnancy, an anniversary, birth, or graduation year. If you wish to make a temperature blanket for the current year, you can use the average daily temperature from the year before. for a historical or memorable year, visit your favorite weather website to get the temperature for your location and year.
3.Record your temperatures
Using a notepad or the printable journal of the Mixed Stitch Crochet Temperature blanket.
Record the highest and lowest temperatures of each month over 12 months.
This will give you a great starting point when selecting a temperature range for your color swatch.
For example,
If your highest average temperature in a year is 37°C / 98°F and the lowest average temperature is 0°C / 32°F, select a color swatch between the above-mentioned temperatures.
Doing a bit of homework beforehand helps you have a better idea of the range of temperatures and will save you some money in the long run, as you won't have skeins of yarn colors that are left over or not even used once your blanket is complete.
4.Select or create your color chart
Select a pre-designed color swatch whose temperature range is within the above-mentioned high and low range. If you can't find a chart that suits your range, you can create a custom chart for yourself. Once you have decided on your color chart, you can gather your supplies.
5.Gather Supplies
Select a yarn, best for crochet blankets in multiple colors (usually 6/12/16 shades), depending on your color swatch/chart. Select a crochet hook in the hook size required for your selected yarn, You will need a notebook, app, or Printable Crochet Journal to track daily temperatures.
6.Choose Your Pattern
You can make your blanket with,
- Single rows per day
- Half Double Crochet Stitches
- Granny squares
- Stripes or chevrons
- Corner-to-corner (C2C) style
- Mixed Crochet Stitches
- Mixed Blanket Stitches
- Custom-designed Temperature Blankets
- Work in the Round Large Granny Stitch Blanket Pattern
- Work in the round Mixed Crochet Stitch Blanket
Keep the stitch simple if you’re doing it daily—it’s more sustainable.
7.Keep Track of Daily Temperatures
Check the high (or low) temp for each day. You can:
- Use a weather app or website
- Record it in a notebook or spreadsheet
- Use a pre-designed temperature blanket journal,
- Use past weather data if you’re starting late
8.Crochet a Row, motif or square each day
Each day (or batch weekly), crochet the row or piece using the color that matches the temperature for that day. Try to stay consistent. You can even add special colors for holidays, birthdays, or events.
Finish & Border It
Once the year is complete, weave in any loose ends and add a simple or decorative border to pull it all together

What is the best stitch for a temperature blanket?
The 365 All year round temperature blanket pattern includes over 30 mixed crochet blanket stitch pattern stitches, from the easy half double crochet stitch, to the moss stitch, some stripped granny stitches, a few variations of the half double crochet V stitches, some combinations of the half double crochet puff stitches and many more pretty crochet blanket stitch patterns.
Single crochet stitch or half double crochet stitch is the most popular stitch for a temperature blanket. Temperature blankets tend to have quite a lengthy result, so I recommend selecting a shorter blanket stitch pattern

Choose the right yarn for a temperature blanket
Select a yarn and yarn brand that is easily accessible to you, and make sure you note which colors are readily available, so you can stock up on colors if you run out. Take note that all climates differ so your color choice and your area temperatures will determine how many skeins per color you will need, and your color requirements might not match those of others.
For this pattern, I recommend a light-weight yarn (category 3 yarn), also referred to as DK weight or Double knitting yarn, but you can select any yarn weight of your choice.
Just note if you wish to use a different weighted yarn, like a medium weight yarn (category 4 yarn), also known as worsted weight yarn, your blanket sizing will be larger.
When selecting your yarn, be sure that you make a gauge swatch and use the sizing chart found within the pattern to determine the correct amount of starting chain stitches you will need using the yarn that you have selected to create the blanket size you require.
The 365 all year round crochet temperature blanket pattern includes a detailed sizing chart with additional instructions on making your required blanket size, from single to twin or double size bedspreads, as well as larger sizes for queen, king and king xl beds.

How to make a crochet temperature blanket gauge swatch
A temperature blanket is a year-long project where each day (or temperature range) gets its own color or stitch. Before you start, make a gauge swatch to ensure your finished blanket matches the size you want. This guide follows the tested method used in the Stouto pattern and adds a few general best practices.
Why a Gauge Swatch Matters
Small differences in tension add up over hundreds of rows. A correct gauge prevents your blanket from ending up too small, too large, or oddly proportioned—saving time and yarn.
- Correct sizing for bed or couch placement
- Even drape and stitch appearance
- Accurate planning for yarn usage
What You Need
Gather your chosen yarn, the crochet hook you expect to use, a measuring tape or ruler, and (optionally) the printable sizing templates from the pattern.
Step-by-Step Gauge Swatch Instructions
Swatch recipe
- Chain 14 stitches.
- Work 1 hdc in the 3rd chain from hook, then 1 hdc in next 11 chains (12 stitches across).
- Chain 2 (turning), work 11 hdc across—repeat for 6 rows to form the swatch body.
- Work an additional 6 rows of hdc to square off the block (total ~12 rows).
If you wish to use a different weighted yarn other than the recommended yarn weight, you can easily find the correct number of starting chains by creating a small swatch.

Gauge swatch: 12 x 6 rows of 1hdc sts.
Measure the gauge swatch width.
Find the width of the blanket size you wish to make for example Twin bed - in the standard blanket table listed in the pattern.
Then use your swatch width to determine your starting chains, using the sizing table provided in the pattern.
Example:
Swatch width : 2.5 inches / 6.3 cm wide,
Width required for finished blanket : Twin - 63 x 95 cm / 160 x 240 cm
Starting Chain : 290 sts
Swatch width : 3 inches
Width required for finished blanket : King : 63 x 95 cm / 160 x 240 cm
Starting Chain : 434 sts
Note : Sizing chart excludes the final border width.

Crochet Temperature Color Charts
How to select a color chart that matches your temperature range, from predefined chart to creating your own custom chart
Select a color chart that matches your temperature range
Most people tend to want to use a temperature blanket with a range already decided for them, but sometimes the range of someone else is not always relevant to your climate, you might live in a very cold climate and won't even use some of the warmer colors, or you might be like me and live in a very warm climate and then not have any of the cooler colors featured in your blanket, so if you wish to create a blanket as uniquely to you and your climate you can
Use a pre-designed color swatch
Select a pre-designed color swatch whose temperature range is within the above-mentioned high and low range.
4 color swatch charts are included with the 365 Mixed Stitch Crochet Temperature blanket Pattern.
All charts allow the use of 12 colors.
- Cold weather climate, Temperature Blanket Color swatch in Fahrenheit
- Warm weather climate, Temperature Blanket Color swatch in Fahrenheit
- Cold weather climate, Temperature Blanket Color swatch in Celsius
- Warm weather climate, Temperature Blanket Color swatch in Celsius
If your temperature range differs greatly from a predefined color chart, opt for your own customized color swatch, as you don't want to end up not using all the colors you so lovingly chose.

Create a custom temperature color swatch
Most people tend to want to use a temperature blanket with a range already decided for them, but sometimes the range of someone else is not always relevant to your climate, you might live in a very cold climate and wont even use some of the warmer colors, or you might live in a very warm climate and then not have any of the cooler colors featured in your blanket.
Start with the overall min and max temperatures are for your area,
Select your colors, the color choice is completely up to you, if you wish to have a lot of color variations in your rows then use one color per temperature, if you live in a climate where there is a huge temperature shift and have a large temperature range then perhaps consider changing colors every 2 to 3° degrees.
For example:
I started with a low of 0°C and a high of 38 °C
I chose 16 of my favorite colors in my example blanket,
Then I divided the total amount of temperatures with the the number of colors I selected
38 / 16 = 2.3 , that gave me One color for each 2 °C on the scale.
I live in a warm climate, and with a low of 0°C and a high of 38 °C ,most days has an average of 20°C - 28°C,
I wanted to have clear lines between days, so I opted to use
one color for every 1°C on the scale between 20°C - 28°C, and
one color for every 2 - 3, even 5 °C. For the temperatures above and below the daily averages.

Free Crochet Temperature Blanket Pattern
Determine yarn usage for a crochet temperature blanket
Determine yarn usage for a half double crochet (HDC) blanket, the most accurate method is to make a swatch and use it to estimate the total yarn needed. Here’s how you can do it step by step.
Step 1: Make a Swatch
Use the same yarn and hook size as you plan for your blanket.
Make a square swatch — about 4" x 4" or larger.
Count how many yards (or meters) of yarn it takes to make that swatch.
Tip: Use a kitchen scale to weigh your swatch. Then calculate yarn usage like this
Step 2: Calculate Yarn Usage per Inch
Example:
Your 4" x 4" swatch weighs 10 grams; your yarn label says 1 skein = 100g = 200 yards
So:
10g = (10 / 100) × 200 yards = 20 yards used for 4" x 4"
Now:
Area of swatch = 16 square inches / Yarn used per square inch = 20 / 16 = 1.25 yards/in²
Step 3: Calculate Total Yarn for Blanket
Say your blanket is 50" x 60" = 3,000 square inches
Then:
3,000 × 1.25 yards = 3,750 yards needed.
